#95: Helping Your Teen Learn To Calm Themselves During Emotional Moments

4 (2)

This is one of the first things I learned when I was trying to get things "right" with my adolescent son. When your teenager is having an emotional tirade or a meltdown or is just stomping around the house and seems out of sorts, you need to know what to do and what to say to help them calm down and regulate their emotions.

Teens are naturally emotionally reactive because of the changes taking place in their brain right now. The problem is, they have very little awareness of what they're actually feeling and very little ability to regulate those emotions (again, you can blame their brain!) So, it's your job to help them calm down and coach them through these emotional moments so they will build the emotional intelligence needed to eventually handle it on their own. You'll learn how in today's episode.
